A Famous Strategist

Born in Pella in 356 BC, Alexander the Great was king of Macedon, a state in northern ancient Greece. Tutored by Aristotle until the age of 16. Alexander by the age of thirty had created one of the largest empires of the ancient world, stretching from the Ionian Sea to the Himalayas.  Alexander was undefeated in battle and is considered one of history’s most successful commanders.  He became the measure against which military leaders even today compare themselves, and military academies throughout the world still teach his strategies and tactics.  A famous quote by Alexander the Great was:  “Greater is an army of sheep led by a lion, than an army of lions led be a sheep.”  This quote reveals the overwhelming importance of an excellent strategic plan for any organization to succeed.  A similar quote by the legendary Alabama football coach Bear Bryant went something like this:  I will defeat the opposing coach’s team with my players, but if given a week’s notice, I could defeat the opposing coach’s team with his players and he take my players.
