Bribery Can Be Detrimental

Inchcape Shipping Services, owned by the Dubai-based Istithmar World, supplies US Navy ships in the Mediterranean and the Middle East – that is, until November 2013 when the USA suspended doing any new business with the company for significantly overcharging on a contract.  This was the second such suspension in late 2013.  Rear Admiral John F. Kirby reported that Inchcape had engaged in “conduct indicating questionable business integrity.”  He said the questions about Inchcape were not related to the investigation of Glenn Marine Defense Asia, another firm under criminal investigation for bribing US Navy officials.  Four Navy officers, including two admirals, have been suspended in connection with the Glenn Marine investigation.  With headquarters in the United Kingdom, Inchcape is “the world’s largest independent marine management company.” Inchcape “used to” services ships for the US Navy and handle most of the work for the US Fifth Fleet in the Middle East and the US Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean.
