A Big Horizontal Integration Deal

On 1-2-14, Fiat SpA, the huge automaker headquartered in Turin, Italy, announced that it is acquiring the remaining 41.46 percent of Chrysler Group that it did not already own – for $4.35 billion. That amount is considered a good deal for Fiat, who made the purchase from the retiree health care trust owned by the United Auto Workers Union. Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne, according to analysts, negotiated a good deal with the purchase, even though Fiat’s total debt will now exceed any automaker in Europe. Fiat already owns Masersati and Ferrari.
